Die vorliegende erste Ausgabe des Webjournals transversal, mit der zugleich die ersten Texte des dreijährigen Projekts transform veröffentlicht werden, ist der Auseinandersetzung mit Vergangenheit und Gegenwart institutionskritischer Praxen im Kunstfeld gewidmet. Unter verschiedenen Blickwinkeln, sowie abseits rein kunsthistorischer Perspektivierungen, beleuchten die Texte das grundsätzliche Verhältnis von "Institution" und "Kritik" ebenso wie den Wandel institutioneller und institutionskritischer Taktiken vor dem Hintergrund eines sich verändernden gesellschaftlich-politischen Rahmengefüges. Wie die historischen Praxen der Institutionskritik erinnert werden, erweist sich dabei als zentral für eine Reflexion auf die Potenziale und Voraussetzungen, unter denen Institutionskritik heute im und über das Kunstfeld hinaus stattfinden kann.

This first issue of the web journal transversal, with which the first texts of the three-year project transform are published, is devoted to the past and present of practices of institutional critique in the art field. Going beyond purely art historical perspectives, the texts examine the fundamental relationship between "institution" and "critique" from various viewpoints, exploring the transformation of institutional tactics and those of institutional critique against the background of a changing social-political framework structure at the same time. The way in which the historical practices of institutional critique are recalled proves to be central here to a reflection on the potentials and preconditions, under which institutional critique can take place in and beyond the art field today.

La primera entrega del web-journal transversal –en la que publicamos los primeros textos del proyecto transform, que durará tres años– está dedicada al pasado y presente de las prácticas de crítica institucional en el campo artístico. Los textos examinan la relación fundamental entre "institución" y "crítica" desde varios puntos de vista que se sitúan siempre más allá de las perspectivas que usualmente adopta la historiografía del arte, explorando la transformación tanto de las tácticas institucionales como aquéllas de la crítica institucional; tácticas que, al mismo tiempo, se observan recortadas sobre el telón de fondo de un marco estructural sociopolítico cambiante. Las diferentes maneras en que se evocan las prácticas históricas de crítica institucional resultan cruciales a la hora de articular una reflexión sobre sus potencialidades, y sobre cuáles son las precondiciones que permiten que la crítica institucional pueda tener lugar hoy en el seno y más allá del campo del arte.
