Transmutation ist die Umwandlung eines Objektes in ein anderes. In der Alchemie wird sie meist mit der Herstellung von Gold in Zusammenhang gebracht. In der Sprachtheorie versteht man sie als ein intersemiotisches Übersetzen. Für Roman Jakobson ist die Transmutation „eine Wiedergabe sprachlicher Zeichen durch Zeichen nicht-sprachlicher Zeichensysteme“. Statt nach Gold wie in der Alchemie wird hier nach Artikulationsformen jenseits der Sprache gesucht. Die in diesem Webjournal versammelten Texte beschreiben solche Zeichenpraxen, die grammatikalisch nicht mehr in ein bestehendes System eingebettet werden können. In diesem Sinne eröffnet die Transmutation neue politische Möglichkeiten. Ein gezieltes Überschreiten von vorherrschenden Ordnungsregeln kann neue Formen des Aufbegehrens entwickeln, die das Begehren nach einer Aufhebung oder Störung dieser Ordnungsregeln zum Ausdruck bringen. Das politisch Neue ist ihr Gold schlechthin, zu dem sie das Bestehende transmutieren wollen, in einer Reihe widerständiger Praxen zwischen politischem Aktivismus, Theater oder dem Rap der Banlieues.

Transmutation is the transformation of one object into another. In alchemy, it is mostly associated with making gold. In linguistic theory, we understand it to mean a process of intersemiotic translation. For Roman Jakobson, transmutation is “a rendering of linguistic signs by means of signs from non-linguistic systems of signification.” Instead of the alchemists’ pursuit of gold, this process of transmutation involves the search for forms of articulation that go beyond language. The texts brought together in this web journal describe such semiotic procedures, which can no longer be grammatically embedded in an existing system. In this sense, transmutation opens up new political possibilities. Transgressing the rules of the dominant order in a targeted way can give rise to new forms of rebellion that express a desire to undermine or abolish those rules. The new political condition is the very gold into which these forms of rebellion seek to transmute current conditions through a series of combative practices: political activism, theatre or the rap of the French suburbs.

Para Roman Jakobson, transmutar es "traducir a signos lingüísticos por medio de signos que provienen de sistemas de significación no lingüísticos". En lugar de la búsqueda alquímica del oro, este otro proceso de transmutación implica la búsqueda de formas de articulación, que van más allá del lenguaje. Los textos reunidos en esta revista web describen este tipo de procesos semióticos que ya no se pueden considerar encerrados en un sistema preexistente. En este sentido, la transmutación abre nuevas posibilidades políticas. Transgredir las reglas del orden dominante con un objetivo concreto puede dar paso a nuevas formas de rebelión que expresan el deseo de socavar o abolir dichas reglas. Estas formas de rebelión buscan transmutar las actuales condiciones políticas en el oro de unas nuevas, mediante una serie de prácticas combativas: del activismo político al teatro o el rap de los suburbios franceses.
