Heimat ist, wo ich verstehe und wo ich verstanden werde, schrieb einst Karl Jaspers. Wenn diese Heimat heute unsere globalisierte Welt ist, dann kann deren Muttersprache nichts anderes als eine sowohl linguistische als auch kulturelle Übersetzung sein. Was aber, wenn wir von dieser Heimat wollen, dass sie eine politische Bedeutung hat, dass sie der Ort der Freiheit, Gerechtigkeit und Gleichheit für alle ist? Sollen wir eine Nation der Übersetzung gründen und deren Souveränität als unabhängiger Staat einfordern? Wer übersetzt, verrät: Muttersprachen, Nationen, Grenzen, und vor allem die alten politischen Träume. Die VerräterInnen aller Nationen werden niemals eine eigene Nation gründen. Es ist Zeit für eine neue Herausforderung. Ist es möglich, die entstehende transnationale Kultur der Übersetzung in nicht-kulturellen Begriffen zu formulieren, oder anders gefragt, sind wir fähig, einen transnationalen kulturellen Raum in eine gemeinsame, transkulturelle politische Aktion zu übersetzen?

Die vorliegende Ausgabe von transversal enthält die Texte aus der Konferenz "Borders, Nations, Translations. The Political Limits of Cultural Trans-Nationalism" (http://translate.eipcp.net/konferenz), die im Rahmen von translate im März 2008 in Wien stattfand.

Home is where I understand and where I am understood, wrote Karl Jaspers once. If this home today is our globalized world, then its mother tongue cannot be but a translation, both linguistically and culturally. And yet, what if we want this home to have a political meaning, to be the place of freedom, justice and equality for all of us? Should we form a nation of translation and claim its sovereignty in an independent state? Who translates betrays: mother tongues, borders and, above all, the old political dreams. The betrayers of all the nations will never form a nation of their own. It is time for a new challenge. Is it possible to articulate the emerging trans-national culture of translation in non-cultural terms or, in other words, are we able to translate a trans-national cultural space into a common trans-cultural political action?

The current edition of transversal presents the texts from the conference "Borders, Nations, Translations. The Political Limits of Cultural Trans-Nationalism" (http://translate.eipcp.net/conference), which took place in March 2008 in Vienna in conjunction with translate.

La patria es el lugar donde entiendo y soy entendido, escribió Karl Jaspers. Pero si esta patria es hoy nuestro mundo globalizado, entonces su lengua materna no puede ser otra que la traducción, entendida ésta tanto en un sentido lingüístico como cultural. Pero ¿qué sucede si queremos que este hogar tenga un significado político, que sea un lugar de libertad, justicia e igualdad para todos y todas nosotras? ¿Deberíamos formar entonces una nación de la traducción, afirmando su soberanía en un Estado independiente? Quien traduce, traiciona: lenguas maternas, fronteras y, sobre todo, viejos sueños políticos. Los traidores de todas las naciones nunca formarán una nación propia. Es tiempo ya de afrontar un nuevo reto. ¿Resulta acaso posible articular en términos no-culturales la emergente cultura transnacional de la traducción? O en otras palabras, ¿seremos capaces de traducir un espacio cultural transnacional en una acción política transnacional común?
