knowledge production and its discontents

When knowledge production becomes the raw material of cognitive capitalism, what becomes of the old factories of knowledge, the universities? With the rising importance of knowledge, they move to the eye of the storm, become objects of desire of neoliberal transformations, objects of competition between regions and continents, but also subjects of struggles against these transformations and competitions. Though the university as a privileged site of struggle has – except for a few moments in time – been only a myth, in recent months there seems to be a rising tide of conflicts around it, in different places around the globe.

Wenn Wissensproduktion zum Rohmaterial des kognitiven Kapitalismus wird, was wird dann aus den alten Fabriken des Wissens, den Universitäten? Mit der steigenden Bedeutung von Wissen rücken sie ins Auge des Sturms, werden Objekte der Begierde der neoliberalen Transformationen, Objekte des Wettbewerbs zwischen Regionen und Kontinenten, aber auch Subjekte der Kämpfe gegen diese Transformationen und Wettbewerbe. Obwohl die Universität als privilegierter Ort des Kampfes außer in wenigen historischen Momenten nicht viel mehr als ein Mythos war, scheinen die Konflikte um sie in den letzten Monaten in Ausbreitung begriffen, und zwar an sehr unterschiedlichen Orten rund um die Welt.

Se la produzione del sapere diviene la risorsa del capitalismo cognitivo, che fine fanno allora le vecchie fabbriche del sapere, le università? Con la crescente importanza della conoscenza, esse vengono sempre di più a trovarsi nell’occhio del ciclone, diventando oggetti del desiderio delle trasformazioni neoliberali, oggetti della competizione tra regioni e continenti, ma anche soggetti delle lotte contro tali trasformazioni e competizioni. Sebbene l’università come luogo privilegiato di lotta – tranne che in poche congiunture storiche – abbia costituito non più di un mito, sembra che negli ultimi mesi, in diverse parti del mondo, si stia diffondendo intorno ad essa una vera onda di conflitti.
