Das Verhältnis von Kunstpraxen und den Staatsapparaten der Polizei und der Justiz war immer schon angespannt. In der Kriminalisierung von aktivistischen KünstlerInnen des Critical Art Ensemble und der VolxTheaterKarawane, in den sich häufenden Fällen von Zensur und gerichtlicher Verfolgung von KünstlerInnen und KuratorInnen im postkommunistischen Raum oder in der Anwendung von Terrorismusparagraphen auf kritische Wissenschaft wie im rezenten Fall des Berliner Sozialwissenschafters Andrej Holm verdichten sich die Hinweise auf eine Verschärfung dieses Verhältnisses. Anstatt diese neue Qualität als pures Mittel sozialer Unterwerfung zu verstehen, versucht die aktuelle Ausgabe von transversal, diese Phänomene in einem erweiterten Begriff von Polizierung (vor allem in Auseinandersetzung mit den diesbezüglichen Theoremen von Foucault und Rancière) zu fassen.

The relationship between art practices and the state apparatuses of the police and judiciary has always been a tense one. In the criminalization of activist artists of the Critical Art Ensemble and the PublixTheatreCaravan, in the growing number of cases of the censorship and legal prosecution of artists and curators in the post-communist region, or in the application of terrorism paragraphs to critical scholarship as in the recent case of the Berlin sociologist Andrej Holm, there are more and more indications of an exacerbation of this relationship. Instead of seeing this new quality purely as a means of social subjugation, this issue of transversal seeks to grasp these phenomena in an expanded concept of policing (especially in a confrontation with the relevant theorems of Foucault and Rancière).

La relación entre las prácticas artísticas y los aparatos de estado policiales y judiciales ha sido siempre tensa. En la criminalización de los artistas activistas del Critical Art Ensemble y el PublixTheatreCaravan, en el número creciente de casos de censura y persecución legal de artistas, curadores y curadoras en los antiguos países socialistas o en la aplicación de la legislación sobre terrorismo al pensamiento académico crítico (como en el caso reciente del sociólogo berlinés Andrej Holm), encontramos cada vez más indicios de una exacerbación de la antedicha tensión. En lugar de representarnos esta situación meramente como una nueva forma de subyugación social, este número de /transversal/ propone comprender estos fenómenos como una extensión del amplio concepto de "policía" que encontramos principalmente en las relevantes teorizaciones de Michel Foucault y Jacques Rancière.
