This Middle

Ludwig Bekić

Five saxophones haunt the vocals of "This Middle". Within a dense tapestry of sound, each one seeks to duplicate the vocals with its own voice. Between the lines, they swarm like insects and immediately regroup for the next verse, only to follow the voice at the center once more with renewed energy. The deliberate failure to achieve unison is intentional. Imperfectly synchronized, spreading out in a fan-like pattern, pulling toward one another, jostling each other—all the voices join in dynamic resonance and amplify the shared flow.

This Middle

Passive-active, mediopassive,
I can speak, I can hear a middle voice
Moving on up in muance and nuance
Moving all down in the midst of its noise
In it, all forms of relations
Asymmetries spread and mutate
Power sinking in gay syncopations
Let it fade let it fade let it fade

This middle is not neutral
This middle never is null
It is a middle of matters
This immanent middle is full
This middle is situated
This middle never is null
It is made of multiple matters
This immanent middle is full

This middle never is static
It tends to get out of hand
Unregulated in many dimensions
It is not a disciplined land
And I am letting myself be drawn,
I am coming into the flow,
I am getting into the middle
Let it go let it go let it go go go

This middle is not neutral
This middle never is null
It is a middle of matters
This immanent middle is full
This middle is situated
This middle never is null
It is made of multiple matters
This immanent middle is full

 “Le milieu …”

All fleeing, nothing a whole
No grading and ranks
No mainstream, but midstream
Forever failing to hold its banks
This middle is flowing
It is ready to overflow
Things pick up speed and they start to swirl
And the middle lets them go lets them go go go

This middle is not neutral
This middle never is null
It is a middle of matters
This immanent middle is full
This middle is situated
This middle never is null
It is made of multiple matters
This immanent middle is full

It is made of multiple matters
This middle is null
Don’t you know that this middle is full
