Slavoj Žižek

born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 1949; since 1979 researcher at the Institute for Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana; visiting professor at numerous US universities such as Buffalo, Minnesota, New Orleans, New York, Ann Arbor and Princeton. Many of his writings examine phenomena of popular culture, film and new media by means of psychoanalytic theory. In 1990 he was candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Slovenia. Currently he directs a research group at the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut, Essen, Germany.
