Workers inquiry, joint research, militant research

Since Marx published his questionnaire for workers in the Revue Socialiste in 1880, there have been countless initiatives (especially in the last fifty years) that have sought to not only interpret the world, but to change it through a new production of reality. What all of these initiatives of militant research have in common – partly using differing terminology – is that they endeavored to overcome the hierarchy between theory and practice, the investigators and the investigated, the political and the personal. In this way they did not simply counter the old institutions of knowledge production with new ones, but instead tested practices of producing collective knowledge that traversed the institutions.

Whereas the majority of historical experiences in the 1960s and 1970s arose from a climate of social upheaval and mass mobilization, the context of current initiatives is a different one: in cognitive capitalism knowledge production takes up a greater and greater portion of overall production; at the same time, the terrain in which current forms of militant research move appears more fragmented, atomized and changeable.

This issue of the web journal transversal attempts to gather various approaches to militant research on the basis of survey texts, historical essays and reflections on current projects.

ArbeiterInnenbefragung, (Mit-)Untersuchung, militante Untersuchung ...

Seit Marx 1880 seinen ArbeiterInnenfragebogen in der Revue Socialiste veröffentlichte, gab es (vor allem in den letzten 50 Jahren) eine Vielzahl von Initiativen, die danach trachteten, die Welt nicht nur zu interpretieren, sondern sie über eine neue Produktion des Realen zu verändern. Allen diesen Initiativen militanter Untersuchung ist – unter teils variierenden Begrifflichkeiten – gemein, dass sie die Hierarchie zwischen Theorie und Praxis, Untersuchenden und Untersuchten, Politischem und Persönlichem zu überwinden strebten. Damit setzten sie nicht den alten Institutionen der Wissensproduktion einfach neue entgegen, sondern erprobten kollektives Wissen produzierende Praxen, die die Institutionen durchqueren.

Während die Mehrzahl der historischen Erfahrungen in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren aus einem Klima des sozialen Aufruhrs und der Massenmobilisierung hervorging, ist der Kontext gegenwärtiger Initiativen ein anderer: Im kognitiven Kapitalismus nimmt die Wissensproduktion einen immer größeren Teil der gesamten Produktion ein; das Gelände, auf dem sich die gegenwärtigen Formen militanter Untersuchung bewegen, scheint zugleich fragmentierter, atomisierter und wechselhafter.

Dieser Issue des Webjournals transversal versucht anhand von Überblickstexten, historischen Aufsätzen und Reflexionen über aktuelle Projekte eine Bündelung der verschiedenen Ansätze der militanten Untersuchung.

Encuesta obrera, co-investigación, investigación militante...

Desde que Marx publicó su cuestionario para trabajadores en la Revue Socialiste en 1880, incontables iniciativas (especialmente en los últimos cincuenta años) han buscado no meramente interpretar el mundo, sino cambiarlo mediante un nuevo tipo de producción de realidad. Lo que todas esas iniciativas de investigación militante tienen en común, dejando aparte diferencias terminológicas y metodológicas, es que buscan superar las divisiones jerárquicas entre teoría y práctica, entre quiénes investigan y a quiénes se investiga, entre lo político y lo personal. De esta manera, no sólo se enfrentan a las viejas instituciones del conocimiento con otras nuevas, sino que también ponen a prueba nuevas prácticas de producción colectiva de conocimiento que atraviesan formas institucionales precedentes.

Mientras que la mayoría de las experiencias históricas que tuvieron lugar en las décadas de 1960 y 1970 surgieron de un clima de levantamiento social y movilización de masas, el contexto de las iniciativas actuales es otro: en el capitalismo cognitivo, la producción de conocimiento se ve cada vez más incorporada a la producción capitalista de valor; al mismo tiempo, el terreno en el que las actuales formas de investigación militante se mueven nos parece más fragmentado y atomizado que sus precedentes.

Esta entrega, la segunda, del webjournal transversal, busca reunir varias aproximaciones a la práctica de la investigación militante, poniendo en común textos de investigación, ensayos históricos y reflexiones sobre proyectos aún en proceso.
